UMass Memorial Health is home to the region’s largest emergency department at UMass Memorial Medical Center. Diagnostic imaging is an integral part of assessing acute illness and traumatic injuries. We offer immediate access to many types of scans and highly regarded radiologists who interpret them.

Emergency Department Imaging Services

UMass Memorial offers a full range of diagnostic imaging services, including the most advanced options. These services are available on-site in our emergency department to ensure the fastest time to diagnosis and treatment.

Offerings include: 

• X-rays use high-energy radiation beams to capture images of bones, joints and soft tissue. This scan takes as little as a few minutes, enabling you to start care as quickly as possible.
• Fluoroscopy uses X-rays to capture real-time moving images of organ systems at work. We may use it to check for issues such as narrowing and blockages.
• Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce moving images of organs and nearby structures. We often perform these scans at your bedside, saving precious time when it matters most.
• CT scans combine X-rays with special technology to produce detailed images. We use them to pinpoint the source of internal bleeding or check for organ damage.
• MRI scans use a strong magnetic field to capture images in thin slices. A computer assembles the pictures into comprehensive views inside the body. We use MRIs to capture details that are not available with most other imaging methods.
