MILFORD, Mass. – Primary Stroke Center Certification was awarded to UMass Memorial Health – Milford Regional Medical Center by The Joint Commission, having demonstrated strict compliance with clinical practice guidelines, performance measurements and continuous quality improvement for stroke care.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term disability in the United States. Prompt, specialized care significantly improves survival and recovery, helping patients return more quickly to their daily lives.

The designation follows the one-day onsite survey in March and reflects the years of dedicated work, collaboration and commitment from teams across the organization focused on patient safety and specialized care resulting in excellent patient outcomes.

“This certification is a great milestone for Milford Regional Medical Center and enhances the strength of care provided throughout the UMass Memorial Health system,” said Vascular Neurologist Adalia Jun-O’Connell, MD, Medical Director of Quality and Stroke Director at Milford Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Jun-O'Connell added that the newly certified Primary Stroke Center nicely compliments the existing Comprehensive Stroke Center at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

“We demonstrated our commitment to providing exceptional healthcare services to our community with dignity, compassion and respect, proving that we are delivering the high-quality, data-driven, evidence-based care to patients experiencing stroke and transient ischemic attack through this honorable certification.”

A Primary Stroke Center certification means patients treated at Milford Regional will receive:

  • Faster diagnosis and treatment to minimize brain injury and improve recovery.
  • Care from specially trained stroked experts who are available around the clock.
  • Evidence-based care aligned with national guidelines.
  • Highly specialized coordinated care from emergency response through recovery.
  • Ongoing quality monitoring and improvement using nationally recognized performance measures.

“Dr. Jun-O’Connell and her team are to be congratulated for advancing stroke care for our patients,” said Chief Medical Officer Peter Smulowitz, MD. “Every second counts when a patient suffers a stroke and this achievement recognizes the unparalleled standard of care we provide to our patients — in their community, close to home.”
